Observation Narrative
This plot is located on the opposite side of a boggy swale from FHMR002, sampled on September 28, 1992. It documents a heavily burned seepage area in the Fort A.P. Hill "impact" area, on a wet, sandy toe slope bordering the swale. Most trees were killed by beaver long ago, and those that remained were top-killed by large incendiary fires. Shrubs of Magnolia virginiana, Clethra alnifolia, and Alnus serrulata are all multistemmed sprouts regenerating from top-killing fires. The prevalent herbaceous vegetation is extremely dense and dominated by Rhynchospora gracilenta, Dichanthelium lucidum, and Eupatorium pilosum.
